Jersey City taxes for the last four years under Mayor Healy

The NJ Sale Tax is easy to understand.  It is
based on the amount of the purchase.  If you spend $100.00, then you pay $7.00.  It is fair, simple, and to the point.  However, property taxes in Hudson County, especially Jersey City, favors one group of voters at the expense of another group.

Nationally, property taxes are 1% of the assessed value of the property.  This year Jersey City taxpayers received an 18% increase from the city and 9% from the county.  In addition, Jersey City Board of Ed taxes increased $7.5 million.  All of these increases pushed the tax rate to $51.75.  This means properties in Jersey City are taxed at 5% of assessed value!

Our government would be out of business if everyone who is a voter is affected by property taxes.  While everyone has the privilege to vote, not everyone is saddle with the burden of paying for local government.  Tax increases mainly affect the 1 to 4 homeowners.

Every town in Hudson County has different rules governing rent-controlled properties.  In Jersey City, rent-controlled properties cannot receive a tax pass along.  Increases are determined by the rent-leveling board.

While the small homeowner received massive increases in 2006, equaling more than 20%, rent-controlled properties went up a mere 3.2%.

While the small homeowner received massive increases in 2006, equaling more than 20%, rent-controlled properties went up a mere 3.2%.

New construction whether low income or luxury housing all receive abatements.  Abatements are contracts, they are not subjected to tax increases.

Again,  residents who live in rent-controlled buildings, low-income housing, or luxury waterfront apartments were not subjected to the massive tax increase that the small homeowner is burdened by.

Since people usually vote their pocketbooks, wasteful government, corruption, and sweetheart deals do not affect a large portion of voters in Jersey City.

Our politicians award generous abatements to developers.  These developers donate generous amount of money to political campaigns.  That money is used by politicians to entertain voters not affected by taxes.  Sometimes people in Jersey City sell their vote for the price of a hotdog.  (Which is a disgrace considering the struggles of civil rights.)  That is why I prefer that the city has an income tax, not a property tax.  Those people who vote for bad government need to be affected by bad government in their wallets!
